The Challenge

At The Fred Hollows Foundation our vision is a world in which no person is needlessly blind and Indigenous Australians exercise their right to good health. For 4 out of 5 blind people, blindness is avoidable. That is, 80 per cent of blindness or vision loss can be either prevented or treated.

We have employees working in 20 countries across Asia, Africa and in Australia to end avoidable blindness. As we grow, a priority is to make sure every person that works for The Foundation around the world has the information they need, to do their job at their fingertips.

Our intranet, FredNet, is central to achieving this. FredNet provides one place to look for our employees as our knowledge base is made accessible globally. It also allows us to provide better service delivery and be much more efficient, as previously paper-based processes can be automated.

We wanted our intranet, FredNet, to have beautiful visual design centered around our inspiring photography and provide advanced functionality that could make teams and individuals more efficient, effective and engaged. Elcom’s great product and customer service meant we achieved both these things and can continue to develop and improve what we offer to our employees over time. Jacob Johnson, IM Manager

The Solution

One main reason we chose Elcom was the ability to add more sophisticated, new modules over time as our team became familiar with FredNet and saw the value it could offer for communication and knowledge management. We also really wanted FredNet to have a great visual design and make use of the beautiful photography and videos we have available to us. These assets show our work restoring sight around the world and are very inspiring for our employees who support this every day.

We also knew that to be relevant, interesting and useful we had to keep content fresh, so FredNet is built around frequently updated content i.e. news, a photo gallery and a ‘What’s New’ feed showing the latest updates/additions. It needed to be accessible and easy to use for everyone, including those in countries where internet connections can be slow and unreliable. Elcom allowed us to achieve all of these things.

The Benefits

As a result of implementing Elcom The Fred Hollows Foundation experienced the following business benefits:
  • Reduced email and increased efficiency
FredNet allows us to reduce both the amount of email we send and the number of paper-based forms we use to manage processes. We are getting positive feedback from employees who can now access more efficient service from support functions.
  • Easy and accessible content management
Elcom is really easy to use and we have been able to train people right across the organisation to upload content, news and resources to keep it fresh and useful. With Elcom it is easy to be creative and publish really visually appealing content including graphics, video and also things like forms, polls and calendars that users can interact with.
  • More connected global community
Our employees are empowered as they have direct, easy access to information and resources no matter where they are in the world. There is more transparency into knowledge we have available to us, meaning we can get more use out of what we have and reduce duplication.
