Overview
The Taxonomy Manager is a content based classification system used to tag content. This allows the content to be displayed in multiple ways for multiple purposes. Used in conjunction with navigation, dynamic content widgets, the eshop and Search it can present information in ways that make sense to you and most importantly your customers.
Accessing Taxonomy Manager
The Taxonomy Manager allows Administrators to create a tree based taxonomy with the ability to set the parameters of each branch and sub-branch.
To access the Taxonomy Manager...
- Login and go to the Admin Dashboard
- Expand the metadata icon and select Taxonomy Manager
Creating a New Taxonomy Branch
To create a Taxonomy branch
- Select the Add New Taxonomy tab
- Enter the name of the Taxonomy
- Specifiy the parent taxonomy branch if applicable
- Specify which content types the taxonomy branch will apply to. Options are...
a. Articles b. Images c. Documents d. Events e. Products
- Enter a description
- Set a public name if applicable [Public name references a lookup table. This option allows admins to set a name for internal reference and a different public name that will be seen by users]
- Set the weighting of this taxonomy term [weighting can be used to artificially adjust search results i.e if weighting is set to 9 for a particualr term then content items tagged with that term will appear higher in the search results page.]
- Set the following options
a. Use in Refine Search – determines if this term should be displayed as a faceted search option b. Use in Event Refine Search – determines if this term should be displayed as a faceted event search option c. Alert Subject – determines if this term should be available as an alert subject option in the users profile [this allows users to set email alerts for new content that has been tagged with specific terms e.g send a weekly update of all new content tagged specials] d. Alert Type – determines if this term should be available as an alert type option in the users profile [this provides and additional mechanism that allows users to set email alerts in their user profile for new content that has been tagged with specific terms e.g send a weekly update of all new content tagged specials] e. User preferences – determines if this term should be available as a personalisation option in the users profile [Dynamic content widgets can be set to display content which matches the users preferences] f. Use in RSS for podcasts – When content is setup as an RSS feed for a podcast server this option specifies that the tag will be used as the RSS category g. Mark Not in Use – Tags cannot be deleted however they can be marked as not in use h. Site Restriction – If Community Manager is deployed in a multi-site configuration this option allows the user to specify if the tag should be used across all sites or only on specific sub-sites

Bulk Upload
Taxonomy structures can be created in an Excel spreadsheet and uploaded to the Community Manager taxonomy repository.
To bulk upload your Taxonomy...
- Select the Bulk Upload tab
- Download the Excel template
- Populate and save the template
- Browse and select the template
- Upload template
Editing and moving taxonomy branches
Taxonomy branches can be easily edited and moved. To do so
- Select the Browse Taxonomy tab
- Expand the selected branch and select the tag to be edited/moved
- To edit the item right click and select edit
- To rename the item right click and select edit
- To move the item simply drag it and drop it on the new branch
Quickly adding a new taxonomy branch
Taxonomy items or new branches can be added by right clicking the parent taxonomy item and clicking add children.
